2022年4月、グローバル・エンゲージメントセンター（Global Engagement Center, GEC）は、国際教育交流推進のため名古屋大学国際本部の下に設置されました。新型コロナ感染症が拡大する前の2019年度に、名古屋大学で学ぶ留学生の数は、学位取得を目指す正規課程に在籍する留学生が学部と大学院を併せて1,890名に達し、研究生、研修生や聴講生として学ぶ非正規生が800名を超えました。2020年度と2021年度はコロナ禍のため人の物理的移動を伴う国際交流の中断を余儀なくされましたが、情報通信技術（ICT）の劇的な普及によって国際教育環境が大きく変化しました。学生らは、渡航しなくてもオンラインで国際交流・国際的経験をすることが可能となりました。教員も対面とオンラインを組み合わせるなど状況に応じて柔軟に講義を実施してきました。そして、新型コロナ感染症は未だに収束が見通せないものの、明るい兆しもあります。2022年になって人的往来を伴う交換留学が再開されました。教員や学生らの間でICT活用は教育や研究においても一般的になりました。
GECにおいて新たに結成された国際教育チームは、海外協定校からの交換留学受入れプログラム（NUPACE）を企画・実施しています。そして、留学生を支援するとともに、本学学生に対しては、海外留学を奨励するため、留学への第一歩から海外インターンシップや「i留学」を含め、パートナー大学における短期研修、さらに長期留学へとつなげる多種多様なプログラムを提供しています。国際教育チームは国際プログラム群（G30）教育の支援も行っています。G30授業はすべて英語で講義されています。この授業は本学の国際学生ばかりでなく、一般日本人学生も出席し、文化的背景を異にする学生らと共に学ぶ機会（共修）を提供し，語学力強化や留学意欲向上に役立てています。将来的には、海外戦略的パートナー大学等との間で実施する国際オンライン協働学習（COIL）型講義の実施や広報を支援します。国際学生と日本人学生らの共修プログラムの提供が国際的に活躍するグローバル人材育成促進に役立つと期待しています。
In April 2022, the Global Engagement Center (GEC) was set up by International Affairs, Nagoya University, to promote international education and exchange. In 2019, the year before the COVID-19 pandemic appeared, 1890 international students sought degrees from Nagoya University. An additional 800 were enrolled as nondegree-seeking students. Although the pandemic hindered international exchange activities in 2020 and 2021, the expanded adoption of information communication technology (ICT) has contributed to dramatic developments in the campus environment for international education. Conveniently, students can now experience international education online without crossing borders. Faculty members have also adopted a more flexible and hybrid style of instruction, blending in person and online lectures. Predicting the end of the pandemic is difficult, but existing evidence suggests some positive changes. Student exchanges, for example, rose in 2022. Additionally, using ICT for education and research has become more common among both faculty and students.
The new International Education Team in the GEC plans and implements programs for exchange students from overseas partner universities (Nagoya University Program for Academic Exchange, NUPACE). In addition to supporting international students, the International Education Team also customizes study abroad programs for Nagoya University students. To encourage more students to go abroad, we provide them with short overseas programs such as “iStudy Abroad,” overseas internships, and longer-term opportunities for study abroad at partner universities.
Another function of the International Education Team is to support the Global 30 International Programs (G30), full-degree programs taught in English. These courses not only offer English-taught classes to international students, but also provide opportunities for Japanese undergraduates to join G30 classes and study in a more culturally diverse atmosphere (Intercultural Collaborative Learning, ICL). Participating students can strengthen their language skills and reinforce their desire to study abroad. In the future, the International Education Team will support collaborative online international learning (COIL) lectures designed with overseas strategic partner universities. The expected benefit from providing educational programs to both international and Japanese students includes the development of more globally minded graduates.
